Interesting news from the Julian Assange school of espionage.
Microsoft publicly disclosed this Monday that it has been contacted by Wikileaks.
As you have probably heard Wikileaks just released a massive dump of CIA documents and manuals called Vault 7 (http://s21.postimg.org/cfsy2adzb/cia_vault_7.jpg).
The organization had subsequently indicated that it would contact the tech firms whose vulnerabilities were disclosed in the document dump on its site.
“WikiLeaks has made initial contact with us via secure@microsoft.com,” a Microsoft representative told Axios (http://www.axios.com/microsoft-says-it-has-heard-from-wikileaks-2313220191.html), adding that no information has yet been shared with the software maker.
Google and Apple representatives have not yet indicated if Wikileaks has been in direct contact.
The context of all this is fascinating because in a sense it does put some of these technology companies in a legal bind.
If they receive and disseminate some of this material (some of which is still categorized as Top Secret), they may be at risk of prosecution or in fact be accused of collusion with Wikileaks.
If the companies refuse to discuss the material with Wikileaks in detail or receive software code etc, they risk willfully ignoring potential safety and security exploits in some of some of their software.
A real catch 22.
