Microsoft has been working on dual screen devices for a while now and we have seen some interesting patents from the company. The company is yet to reveal their first dual-screen device but we recently reported that they have a prototype which was shown to a couple of employees.

Now, a new patent has been revealed which defines an interesting use case for dual screen devices in general. The patent titled “MOBILE SMART DEVICE WITH INTEGRATED DAWN SIMULATION” was filed by Microsoft with the USPO (http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20190204791.pdf) in 2017 and was published on July 4, 2019.

The patent talks about using dual screen devices for Dawn Simulation. In case you don’t know, Dawn Simulation is a technique used to make sure an individual slowly wakes up in the morning and is done using different lightings, alarms, etc.

The disclosed technology is generally directed to mobile clock devices. In one example of the technology, a device includes a first screen, a second screen, and a controller. The second screen is physically coupled to the first screen and is facing a different direction than the first screen. The controller is configured to cause the first screen to operate as a clock display. The controller is further configured to cause the second screen to provide indirect light such that the indirect light gradually increases beginning at a time proximate to a predetermined time until the predetermined time is reached.

The patent details a dual screen device in tent-mode being used for Dawn Simulation. The patent shows a screen with various alarms, emails, and lighting settings. On the other picture is showing a screen with the time and the weather for the day.

Microsoft hasn’t mentioned specifically if the patent is for the rumored Surface phone/Centaurus. However, it can most certainly be used for any dual screen laptop or mobile.
