A new service pack always brings some excitement, but unfortunately it also brings new issues too. Just a few days ago, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 RTM build was leaked, and there have been already reports of installation problems. Even yours truly, has encountered one. In fact, that's why Microsoft hasn't released SP1 officially yet; they are waiting for developers and OEMs to ensure drivers and 3rd party software are 100% compatible with SP1.

First of all, I bet you wondering what's so cool about SP1? Well, SP1 brings 625 hotfixes, most of which weren't released to Windows Update. Additionally, SP1 also brings improved HDMI audio performance and support for an AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions) instruction set that was introduced in Intel Sandy Bridge processors. So I can't blame you for wanting to install SP1 as soon as possible, but if you're afraid of installation issues, or already suffering some – we're here to help.

1. Make sure the installation files came from a reputable source. We highly recommend that you avoid torrents or any other non-legitimate source. Listed below are the checksums so you could verify the files you have are 100% legitimate and not corrupt.

2. Ensure your system is clean of viruses, malware and other crapware.
If you don't have an antivirus installed, check out our downloads section to obtain a free one.

3. Ensure your system files aren't corrupt by using System File Checker.
Run » sfc /scannow

4. Scan your files and partitions for errors with chkdsk.
Run » chkdsk c: /F

5. Clean Windows Update cache files.
Run » net stop wuauserv » Navigate to Windows root folder » Delete the SoftwareDistribution folder » Run » net start wuauserv » Control Panel » Windows Update » Press on Check for updates to recreate the cache

6. Uninstall all drivers.
Control Panel » Programs and Features

7. Uninstall antivirus and firewall. Don't disable it temporarily! Remove it completely.
Control Panel » Programs and Features

8. Disable all Non-Microsoft services and startup applications.
Run » msconfig » Press on Services tab » Check Hide all Microsoft Services box » Press on Disable all » Press on Startup tab » Press on Disable all » Ok » Reboot

9. If you're using 64-bit edition of Windows 7, verify that KB976902 is installed on your system, and if it isn't – install it.
Control Panel » Programs and Features » View installed updates

10. If you're using a slipstreamed version of Windows 7 by vLite, you must delete vLite's registry entry in-order to install Service Pack 1.
Run » regedit » HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE » SOFTWARE » Right click on vLite and choose Delete

11. If you have ever used Driver Sweeper and now you're getting: "Service Pack Installation Cannot Continue (one or more system components that service pack requires are missing)" with error code of 0x800f0826.
Read and follow these instructions in-order to solve this problem

12. If all of the steps above haven't solved your problem, try looking for clues as to what is causing the installation to fail (such as missing files/repositories or error codes) inside the following log files:

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

We hope that our Service Pack 1 troubleshooting guide was useful for you. And if you discover any other workaround or issue, please let us know by posting a comment below. And lastly, for all those people who say "I'll wait until it appears on Windows Update", I'd like to quote our very own mkey: "Why do anything then? Don't take a risk leaving the house, people may see you walking around". Meanwhile, happy SP1 everyone.

I have encountered only one 'glitch'... the non genuine watermark appears in the bottom corner...I run slmgr /xpr the machine comes back 'permanently activated' and the watermark goes away...  :-\

The Sp1 installed ok on my desktop system ... but afterwards I couldn't get on the internet - no web pages would come up either with IE or Firefox.  I thought it might be my internet service but I went on my laptop and got to web sites.
Luckily I did the Sp1 install on a spare hard drive and when I went back to the original (non Sp1) hard drive all was normal once more.

Anyone else seen this?

Solved.  It was an update in Avast somewhere between October 2010 (the date of the installation file) and now that caused the problem.  I really don't want to go back to AVG.  :-\

Then you might want to give Microsoft Security essentials (MSE) a try.  It plays well with Win 7, is FREE, and works Great

It is here

Thanks.  I'm running Advanced System Care on it - also free.  And I kinda like it.   I'll see if MSE will co-exist with it.

You can run it with the Advanced System Care program at the same time with MSE, at least here its working very well.
