Intel lands Atom infotainment deal with Nissan
« on: April 06, 2012, 04:08:42 PM »
Nissan has struck a deal with Intel that will allow them to use Atom processors to power in-vehicle infotainment systems starting in 2013. With the partnership, Nissan will join the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota as companies that employ Atom-based solutions.

The trend of bringing entertainment from the home to the vehicle isn’t new as Ford has been enjoying success with their Sync system for quite some time. As auto makers look to differentiate themselves from the competition, chip providers like Intel stand to move a large volume of chips for auto applications. Tom Steenman, vice president of intelligent systems at Intel, noted that consumers spend nearly two months out of every year in their vehicles.

The deal with Nissan will see the duo work together to research and develop what they call “innovative driving experiences.” This will include better methods to link smartphones to vehicle systems, cloud services and providing video surveillance capabilities via handsets, among other things.

Already in the pipeline is a twin-display vehicle infotainment system that can display entertainment on one side and navigation for the driver on the other. The description sounds strikingly similar to the dual-view line of televisions from Philips that we highlighted earlier this year, although we aren’t sure if twin-display means that in literal terms or not.

Either way, the new system will first find its way into the Infinity LE, a zero-emissions concept vehicle from the auto maker. Nissan hasn’t detailed exactly what models will receive the infotainment system.
