Smartphones have changed our lives in a big way. They have stopped being just mobile phones. A decade earlier, no one could have imagined phones being used for navigation, video chatting and most important of all, photography. Most Smartphones come equipped with powerful cameras that have made photography more spontaneous. Another, feature they has, is scanner support. Yes, the feature that I have been yearning long was materialized in the form of an app, the Office Lens app for Windows Phone.
Convert images into Word and PowerPoint filesOffice Lens is an app for that digitalize notes on whiteboards or blackboards and converts them readily into Word documents and PowerPoint presentations that you can edit anytime, anywhere. It’s just like having a scanner in your pocket!
All it requires you to do is take a picture of any hardcopy document using your Windows phone and tap Save. A new Word document is automatically created and saved to your OneDrive, so you can access it on any device. One might ask at this point, what about the quality of the image? Is it compromised? No, not at all!
Although Camera-phone users capture images under diverse conditions resulting in more blurred images or suffering from glare, Office Lens can enhance and align it perfectly. Here’s a whiteboard image taken at an angle exhibiting glare.

The Office Lens app works wonders during an emergency situation. For instance, what do you do if you’re about to submit an assignment and observe a typo during the last minute reading on the way? Simply capture a screenshot of it using Office Lens and convert it into a new Word file. Thereafter, you can then make the changes on your device instantly and print it again when you get to campus. For PowerPoint, all the handwritten lines and strokes are transformed into PowerPoint drawing objects that can be recolored, resized, repositioned and edited.
Office Lens requires logging in with your Microsoft Account. Your Microsoft Account must be same as the one registered on your device.
While Office Lens can be defined rightly as pocket scanner and works like a charm, it can be made better. For example, addition of an option to save and share as PDF will give another star in my rating. Also, there’s one limitation about the app. It takes max 5 pictures.
