Quite often the most finicky thing about operating systems is their installation procedures. The ISO for the Windows 10 Enterprise Preview that Microsoft released recently is no different.
Arriving as the first real ISO outside the traditional distribution methods that the company has set in place, this evaluation version can be used until April 2015 without any limitations. And you can use this to either perform a clean install or upgrade from on previous installation.
However, said that there are a few considerations that you might want to take into account first.
Microsoft has listed a “Preinstall information” section just below the download links to make sure everyone that downloads the files is on the safe side.
Safe side from not being able to return to your previous version of Windows unless you perform a clean install again. As stated:
If you decide that you want to install Windows 10 Technical Preview for Enterprise using one of the provided ISO files, you won’t be able to uninstall it. In addition, after you install Windows 10 Technical Preview for Enterprise, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your preview version of Windows. A clean installation of your former operating system will be required, and you will need to re-install all of your programs and data.”
Pretty heavy stuff, but nice to see Microsoft firing off the warning shots beforehand.
As is the case with most preview versions of Windows, it’s advisable to either deploy them on a spare PC or laptop, or in a virtualized environment.
