6 Hidden Tricks in Windows 10
« on: August 08, 2015, 07:33:47 PM »

Let’s Talk about Windows 10

As for the 6 hidden features in Windows 10, you can watch the video below to learn all about them.

#1 Pop-up e-mail notifications from Mail

This may surprise you, but the Outlook mail application in Windows 10 doesn’t serve up toast notifications or play a sound when a new e-mail comes in. Notifications do show up in the action center, but if you don’t make a habit out of checking there, you probably won’t realize you received a new e-mail.

Fortunately, you can enable this in the settings of the Mail application. Here’s how:

– Click on the Settings button in Mail

– Click on options

– Scroll to the bottom and check the boxes “Show a notification banner” and “Play a sound”

#2 Customize Folders in Start Menu

Along the left side of the Start Menu are a few shortcuts that you can customize. Do you need to access your downloads folder very frequently? How about photos? The good news is you’re in control of the shortcuts that show up there.

Here’s how to customize that:

– Go to the Settings app

– Go to Personalization

– Go to Start

– Click on the link that says “Choose which folder appears on Start”

#3 Find Apps Quickly with the Jump List

How many applications and programs do you have installed on your machine? Depending on how many apps you have, you may have to scroll for what may seem like minutes to find the app that you need. You can skip all that scrolling with this nifty hidden feature, though.

In the “All apps” section of the Start Menu, tap or click on any of the letters or numbers above the apps. This will open up a jump list. Next, just tap or click on the first letter of the name of the app you want to launch. Want to launch the Xbox app? Click on the X. Pretty handy!

#4 Activate Cortana with your Voice

Of course, the fastest way to launch any app is just to type the name into Cortana. What might be even faster is just saying the name of the app you want to launch. This is an option, provided you’re signed into your PC with a Microsoft account. If you are, here’s how you can turn on voice activation:

– Open Cortana

– Open the hamburger menu

– Go to notebook

– Go to settings

– Turn on “Hey Cortana”

Next, your PC will ask you to read off a phrase to calibrate your microphone, and then you’re all set. Try saying “Hey, Cortana, open Mail”.

#5 Change Cortana’s Icon

Is the Cortana search box taking up too much room on your taskbar? No problem! You can change the graphic from the search box to an icon. If you don’t want to use Cortana at all, you can hide the interface entirely.

– Right click on the taskbar

– Go to “Cortana”

– Select “Hidden”, “Show Cortana icon”, or “Show search box”.

#6 Change Search Engine Provider in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is a really nice browser. It’s fast, it’s got a clean UI, and it has some great features built in. As with most modern web browsers, the address bar doubles as a search box. In this case, the address bar uses Bing as the default search engine. If you’d prefer to use another search engine, you can change that. Here’s how:

– Click on the ellipsis in the top right corner

– Choose Settings

– Click “View advanced settings”

– Click on the drop-down under “Search in the address bar with”

– Click “Add new”

On the next screen, you should see a list of various search engines you’ve used. If you don’t see the search engine provider you want to use, you’ll just need to visit that site, and then come back to this area of settings.
