Microsoft Might Give Up On Windows 7 Cumulative Updates
« on: January 18, 2016, 11:09:09 PM »
End of convenience? There is talk that Redmond is now considering doing away with the concept of Windows 7 cumulative updates, more commonly known as convenience rollups.

Users of the world’s most popular desktop operating system are still hoping for a SP2, a second service pack for the OS — even if Microsoft has made it clear on multiple occasions that they instead prefer to focus on newer versions of Windows.

The software titan does occasionally releases what it calls convenience rollups — which are basically cumulative updates for Windows 7 that include multiple fixes and patches in an easy-to-deploy package.

These are particularly helpful for users that are setting up their computers for the first time, as they can bring their PCs fully up to date with just one reboot.

Instead of multiple installations of the patches and updates that are available at that time.

And while Microsoft had promised to release such a convenience rollup in 2015, it appears that this is no longer the plan. As clarified by a company spokesperson:

“There are more than 200 million monthly active devices around the world running Windows 10, with more than 76% of our enterprise customers in active pilots and over 22 million devices running Windows 10 across enterprise and education customers.

With the success our customers are experiencing upgrading to Windows 10, we have not released additional updates to Windows 7 SP1 related to the upgrade process. We don’t have further details to share, but we’ll continue to listen to customer feedback.”

All good things come to an end, as the saying goes.

So if are still a heavy user of Windows 7 and do multiple installations regularly, then this might be less than comforting news for you.

But at least, you can keep your computers up to date, without much trouble.

For everyone else this shows that Microsoft is pushing really hard to upgrade users to Windows 10, and will only move away from Windows 7, even Windows 8.1, as time goes by. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, at the end of the day.
