VLC announces UWP app for Windows 10
« on: April 20, 2016, 05:03:55 PM »
VLC today announced that the company is launching a new UWP app for Windows 10 devices soon. VLC will be coming to Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Xbox One, and even Windows 10 IoT. Of course, the app won’t be launching for all these devices at the same time, and the company will slowly launch it in new devices. The VLC app for Windows 10 will first launch on Windows 10 Mobile (most likely Redstone only) next week in beta, and the official release is planned for early May.

For Windows 10 Desktop, the company plans to launch the private beta in early May, while the official release is planned for mid-May. As for the Xbox One, VLC states:

We’ve been working on Xbox One for a long time, even considered a Windows 8 app last year, but we could’nt because of the lack of proper APIs. The work on the Xbox One UWP port started in February, and it’s been a pleasure to follow the SDK updates.

Check out our repo and try it yourself on your Xbox One starting next week. It’s still far from perfect but we have several pieces of code not merged yet in the master branch. The app will be available this summer, when developers will be able to publish UWP apps on Xbox.

The app is also coming to Windows 10 IoT, and the company is apparently working on the app for Raspberry Pi 3, but no release date is available just yet. As for the HoloLens, the company does not have much to share just yet. It is also worth noting that VLC will be dropping support for its Windows 8.1, Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows RT support sometime around May.
