Few can deny that Microsoft has been on the front foot recently in trying to get Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10. This aggressive approach has drawn criticism for the company.

But at the same time, the software titan has also offered methods to prevent the upgrades.

IT admins and advanced users have official ways to block the deployment of the new operating system, and stick with their current version of Windows. An update that Microsoft released in mid-2015 for Windows 7 computers, for example, does exactly this.

You can download both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of this update below, which introduces a new policy that completely blocks the upgrade to new versions of the operating system.

All you need to do is install this update and then enable the new policy to ensure that your system never gets upgraded to Windows 10.

Interestingly, this update is also shipped with Windows Update, meaning it may already be available on a fully updated computer.

To enable this new policy, simply fire up the Group Policy Editor by typing gpedit.msc in Run and then navigating to the following path: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.

You will find the option called “Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update”, simply set it to Enabled and that will be that.

This may not be a completely new method, particularly for advanced users, but at least Microsoft provides an official and easy to implement option for Windows 7 users to stay on their version of the OS if they so desire.
