Quantum Break Steam Version Runs Much, Much Better
« on: October 01, 2016, 05:57:50 PM »
Proof that it’s not about having the power, it’s about how you use it! Quantum Break has just been released on Steam and it has been confirmed that this particular version runs much better.

Than the DirectX 12 one, that is.

In fact, according to various reports, the Steam version can be up to 30% faster than the Windows 10 version on NVIDIA GPUs — and while this is not a surprising fact, the numbers are really interesting in how it is a third better when it comes to performance.

Here are some comparison videos:

And given the fact that there are no visual differences between the DX11 and DX12 versions, it does lead the DirectX 12 technology into a bit of a quagmire. Because while the advantages it brings are obvious, particularly during CPU heavy scenarios, this underwhelming performance is a drawback.

The Steam version only supports DirectX 11, and Remedy has claimed that it was more comfortable with this API, which is the reason why they decided to go with this and focus on this older technology.

But the thing about this older technology is that it is possible to eke out more performance out of it via drivers and graphics card makers chip in to help. With DirectX 12, more of these optimizations have to be done by the developers themselves.

Hence we are seeing more of these un-optimized ports and titles.

Forza Horizon 3 for instance, is another recent example that struggles to run at peak performance.

Guess we’ll just have to wait until more developers start properly optimizing their games for DirectX 12, both for CPU intensive scenes and general performance, to see the technology really take off with gamers and developers.

After all, the thing about power is how you use it!
