Microsoft Edge Will Soon Be Updated Via The Windows Store
« on: October 07, 2016, 08:17:38 PM »
Which is to say that Microsoft Edge will move away from using Windows Update as its update vector, and start using the Windows Store soon. And this brings along a few neat advantages.

Redmond, when first unveiling this new web browser, promised a much faster release cadence than Internet Explorer. IE was notably slow when it came to receiving feature updates, and many believed that Microsoft was taking a similar approach to what Google and Mozilla have for their solutions.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case.

As Edge continued to be updated alongside Windows 10.

But as noted, this is going to change very soon, as the software titan confirmed at an Ignite session that it plans to start updating Microsoft Edge via the Windows Store.

Fred Pullen revealed this change in direction:

What this means is that feature updates like controls, Reading View, and maybe even extensions will be updated independent of the versions of Windows 10.

However, the Edge engine will still be chained to new Windows builds, and that is because Universal apps do require access to it. And tinkering with it too often may lead to glitches and issues with apps and software that is dependent on this new web browser.

And while Pullen has not provided a date for when we can expect this change to occur, given that Redstone 2 is on its way, it just seems the most likely release window here.
