For many years now Microsoft has been working on providing broad band internet via so-called White Spaces. White Space are the frequency bands in between TV channels, which has been expanded recently with the demise of analogue TV in favour of Digital TV channels, and has the benefit of long range and deep penetration into homes.

Seemingly now re-branded as “Super Wi-Fi” and based on the “802.11af” wireless technology standard , the technology has seen trails in many countries, including UK, USA, India, Kenya and more, and  today network equipment provider D-Link also announced support for the technology.

D-link Corp Chairman John Hsuan said: “D-Link is greatly honoured to participate with Microsoft in the “Super Wi-Fi” project, and will also in the future continue to uphold the principle of “Building Networks for People” and in the spirit for friendship, with Microsoft and project partners help build a better global digital environment by joining forces.”

He added that D-Link will make good use of their Netcomm professional strength and global resources to assist the “Super Wi-Fi” technology platform continues to thrive.

Head of Microsoft Taiwan’s Enterprise Business and Distribution group Gong Shuzhe said: “Microsoft’s aim is for the establishment of science and technology popularization, and Microsoft’s mission is committed to helping every person and every organization in the world achieve more and more. As a result, Microsoft is working with companies all over the world, studying and researching with partners the development of new technologies and business models. Unfortunately billions of people around the world have no Internet access, or easy Internet access they can afford. To promote the realization of these goals, Microsoft is pleased to work together with D-link to develop a wireless network (Super Wi-Fi) technology which uses White Spaces TV frequency bands, to build a complete ecosystem.”

No products were announced in the statement.
