Edge In Windows 10 Build 14997 Now Automatically Blocks Flash
« on: December 29, 2016, 07:42:26 PM »
Prepare for a future without the Flash Player! It’s happened, folks. The Microsoft Edge web browser now blocks Flash by default, with the goal of focusing on the HTML5 technology for websites that support it.

We have been hearing a lot about this implementation lately.

And Windows 10 build 14997 that made its way out over the weekend includes this subtle change.

Of course, along with a range of other improvements, mostly related to how tabs are managed in that web browser. You can take a look at these enhancements like tab previews, the ability to set aside tabs and tip notifications here.

Getting back to Flash, though, Microsoft had announced this new behavior earlier this month in a statement released earlier in the middle of December:

Quote
“In the coming months, we will actively monitor Flash consumption in Microsoft Edge and will gradually shorten the list of automatic exceptions. At the end of this process, users will remain in control, and will be able to choose Flash for any site they visit.”

Sounds like a plan!

And Edge 39.14997 is putting this plan in action.

This new Flash blocking ability is exclusive to Edge right now, though, and is not yet available in Internet Explorer. Then again, Microsoft has been heavily focused on Edge right now, as opposed to IE, and this implementation only makes sense.

Keeping in mind the fact that other companies like Google, Mozilla and Apple are also moving away from Adobe Flash.

Not only is the Flash Player notorious for security vulnerabilities, it is also a solution that heavily impacts battery life and performance of applications. It had its time in the sun, but the future is HTML5.
