CES 2017: DELL ANNOUNCES THE ULTRASHARP 8K MONITOR
« on: January 06, 2017, 05:56:26 AM »

The nerve! 4K may yet to go completely mainstream, but Dell is already signaling the future with the UltraSharp 8K monitor that it has just unveiled at CES 2017.

That’s four times the resolution of 4K.

7860 x 4320, to be precise.

Doing justice to its name!

The display is only 32-inches in size, which is a bit of a bummer. But as the photo below shows, it is quite a looker. Not always do you get screens that look good as well as they perform, but this is one of those rare cases.

Observe:

Note, in particular, the tiny taskbar in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Dell, obviously, insists that this display is not meant for text-based menus at all, and is essentially designed for content creation. Well, one thing is for sure. Microsoft will really need to fix up the resolution issues in Windows 10 to bring forth the 8K revolution.

Because at 100% scaling, as the image above shows, you can barely read a thing.

Then again, perhaps that is why the company is currently focused on Project Neon, it’s bid to refine the Windows 10 user interface.

And in case you’re wondering about the technical aspects of this beauty, it uses two DisplayPort 1.3 cables. It’s hard enough for a cable to fully power these 33.2 million pixels — one can power 8K at 30Hz, but you will need two for 60Hz.

Dell also notes that the appropriately named UltraSharp has a 100% Adobe color gamut, and it can produce over a billion colors, which is expected for a display of this caliber.

And how much will this cost you right now?

The company has put a price of under $5,000, but it says that eventually the price will come down, as the technology matures and the 8K bandwagon picks up pace.

Then again, no one ever said the future was cheap!
