Windows 10 sales momentum continues
« on: February 20, 2017, 07:08:03 PM »
British rail users will be all too familiar with the concept of delays and checking their watches for the time of arrival of their long awaited means of transport.

For most of last year those hoping for a Windows 10 impact in the PC market were in a similar position pushing back the moment when there would be visible signs of a sales uptake from the the third to fourth quarter and keeping their fingers crossed it would arrive.

There was relief towards the end of last year as the analysts started talking about the impact of Windows 10 Pro in the commercial sector.

The latest evidence that business users are still making the switch to Windows 10 has come from Context, which gets numbers from European distributors, indicating that January continued the momentum of late last year.

Last month Windows 10 Pro accounted for 57% of all windows PCs sold through distribution, which was up by 9% on December.

“Now eighteen months into its life cycle, this latest rise has brought adoption rates for Windows 10 Pro closer to those reached by its most popular predecessor after a similar time span”, said Marie-Christine Pygott, senior analyst at Context.

Across Western Europe the UK saw the strongest percentage of Windows PCs sold with the latest Microsoft operating system, well up on places like Germany and France (see box).

The timing of the Windows 10 pick-up has coincided with stronger commercial PC sales. Although the demand for consumer hardware remains soft the business buyers have given manufacturers a boost and according to Context were up by 6% year-on-year in Q4.

The last indication from Microsoft about the installed base of Windows 10 revealed that the software is now running on 400m devices, although a significant proportion of those are consumer products.
