The Goldilocks strategy. Qualcomm has discussed Windows 10 ARM at MWC 2017, providing more details regarding its partnership with Microsoft to bring Windows 10 on these processors.

And in the process, assured everyone that they this category of PCs will not be too expensive.

Apparently, Qualcomm and Microsoft are trying to avoid the Windows RT disaster, and one way to do that is to enable full Win32 apps. In the words of Keith Kressin, senior vice president of product management at Qualcomm Technologies:

Quote
“The goal is to get something credible out, show people why it’s different from RT. Show that it’s Windows 10—there isn’t a second version of Windows 10.”

Fair enough.

The idea being to offer a more compelling feature package as part of the concept which the company describes as cellular PCs.

Qualcomm says that these devices will not exactly be extremely low-cost, but on the flipside, they will also not be prohibitively expensive. Because at that point, buyers will simply gravitate towards Intel or AMD based solutions.

But it seems that Qualcomm wants to make these type of ARM powered PCs available to a wide array of potential buyers.

One thing worth a mention here is that these cellular PCs will not actually arrive on the market in high numbers. Qualcomm explains that only a few models are set to be available at first, as right now, both Dell and AMD have expressed an interest in adopting ARM chips for PCs.

These will not provide the performance of gaming experience that high-end desktops offer, but these devices will be primarily focused on browsing and working with documents.

There also remains a possibility that these ARM chips could be used on Windows Holographic headsets, but even though Qualcomm is hinting that these chips can support VR, Microsoft has not yet made a decision on this.
