This Is End For Windows Phones, Kantar Says
« on: March 15, 2017, 08:49:04 PM »
Hope you’re ready for a two OS world! Independent market analysis firm Kantar Worldpanel has written off Windows in the global phone market, saying that there will only be two mobile ecosystems moving forward.

Android and iOS.

The latest statistics released by the market share research firm confirm what we already know, and that is the fact that the Windows based handsets no longer have the power to support a third widely used operating platform.

And its declining share brings it closer to BlackBerry, rather than the two leaders, Android and iOS:

Quote
"Gone are the days when a BlackBerry OS, Symbian, or Windows Mobile could make a significant impact. It is clear that there will only be two smartphone ecosystems moving forward – iOS and Android. To succeed, phone manufacturers will have to play by those rulebooks.”

Well, that’s that.

This calls for some statistics, though!

The Windows phones decline in terms of sales continued well into the 3-month period ending January, with these handsets once again losing points in all big markets. The table below has the details, but they paint a very sorry picture, as you can see:

Fascinatingly, the only market where Windows powered phones actually improved was in Japan, where it went from a 0.5% share to a rather surprising 1.5%.

But it goes without saying that the platform will continue its decline in most markets around the globe, and Microsoft, for all intents and purposes, is done in the smartphone market.

Only the semantics now remain!
