Windows 10 Will Now Force Some Updates On Users
« on: March 16, 2017, 09:26:57 PM »
Force them, no matter their internet connection! One of the biggest annoyances with the original version of Windows 10 was how systems updates were provided to PCs, regardless of their connections.

This led to many users exceeding their data plans, and sometimes even caused huge charges for those that were on cellular connectivity.

Microsoft then introduced an option for users to mark their connections as metered, and this allowed them an option to only download these large updates via broadband or WiFi connections. But now it appears that Redmond is making another change here — change that could annoy some users.

And that is because the upcoming Creators Update will change how the metered connection switch works in Windows 10.

As noted, the OS will receive essential upgrades even if this option is enabled.

This new tip, which you can see above, in the Windows Update page of the latest Windows 10 build explains how the updates will be delivered to PCs and devices that have metered connections in the Creators Update.

Previously, metered connections were excluded, as can be seen in the image below:

Microsoft explains this as:

Quote
“We’ll automatically download and install updates, except on metered connections (where changes may apply). In that case, we’ll automatically download only those updates required to keep Windows running smoothly updates required to keep Windows running smoothly.”
Of course, the software titan has not provided any specifics on what thee updates required are, but this is nevertheless, something that may cause some concerns in the Windows 10 user base.

Then again, with the constantly increasing sizes of the cumulative updates, maybe such an option makes sense on some level. Microsoft could ship security updates and critical patches to all systems, while delivering the rest of them once a fast connection becomes available on a PC.

We’ll probably hear more details from the company before the rumored April 11 launch date of the Creators Update.
