Windows 10 Tutorial: Block Ads In File Explorer
« on: March 21, 2017, 06:03:30 PM »

Microsoft is taking ads in Windows 10 one step further with the inclusion of promotional material in File Explorer. More specifically, OneDrive ads are showing for some users.

You can see how they look in the image above.

Mostly users rocking the upcoming Creators Update builds are the ones that are seeing these new type of ads, those that are testing the preview of this new version of the operating system in beta. But similar notifications are also displayed for the previously released Anniversary Update for the OS.

Nobody asked for this, yet here we are.

These are not exactly intrusive, but then again, this is how things start. Microsoft may well expand this to include more services, and start serving ads for other businesses like Office 365, Skype and whatnot.

Luckily, the company provides a way to block and disable these ads in File Explorer.

Redmond calls them tip notifications, and if you want to disable them, all you have got to do is turn off a single option and they will disappear.

To get started, launch File Explorer, go to View and then Options, and then click or tap on the Change folder and search options button.

Open the View tab here.

Look for an entry here that says Show sync provider notifications, and make sure that it is disabled.

Once you do that, no other banners will show up in File Explorer, though it is not clear why Microsoft is not offering a setting to turn these ads off in one place. Maybe an option in the Settings app or in the Control Panel that manages all promotional messages would be a good idea.

But at least, the company does provide a way to turn these off.
