A new phishing initiative has been spotted on Google’s Gmail service and has gotten the attention of security professionals as many are falling into the trap.

Ongoing Gmail phishing threat

The newly detected scam consists of a fake email that contains a picture that looks like an attachment icon. Clicking it will redirect users to a website that simulates Google’s login page where users are asked to input their personal account information, something all professionals usually warn against ever doing.

Nevertheless, many people do click on this file and find themselves transported to the malicious web page. By inputting their private information on these pages, users put their personal security and wellbeing in jeopardy since doing so gives attackers the tools they need to gain access to sensitive data. Depending on who the victim is and what they do, this can have dire consequences on friends, family members or even colleagues.

Users aren’t defenseless

Newer versions of Google Chrome and other browsers display information about the web pages they’re accessing, which can be a very helpful tool in checking if a web page is legitimate or not.

By using one of the updated versions of popular browsers, users reduces their chances of being infected with all sorts of harmful and malicious software. On the contrary, those that aren’t careful can find themselves in a bad position.
