Apple today announced that the company will not be introducing upgrading the Mac Pro this year, but it’s working on a new Mac Pro that will likely arrive next year. The company shared some interesting stats for its Mac business today, and the data is pretty interesting. According to Apple, there are nearly 100 million users actively running its Mac devices. For comparison, there are more than 400 million active Windows 10 devices — making the OS 4 times more popular than Apple’s Mac devices.

There is a huge catch here, though. Microsoft announced that there were 400 million active Windows 10 devices back in September of last year — that’s more than half a year ago. Over the past 6 months, Windows 10 likely gained more active devices, even though the OS’ growth has slowed down recently.

When you take into account Windows 7 and other versions of Windows, Microsoft’s OS obviously power a lot more devices than Apple’s Mac devices. Windows 7 still claims nearly 50% of the desktop market share, making the OS twice as more popular than Windows 10. The majority of Windows 7 users are enterprises, and once they move to Windows 10 in the future, Microsoft’s latest and greatest OS will become a lot more popular than Mac — and possibly power a billion machines.

Even then, Apple’s Mac business is quite profitable for the company as it’s nearing $25 billion run rate — making it big enough to be a Fortune 100 company on its own. However, Apple’s Mac fans don’t seem too happy with the Mac line at the moment. Microsoft is expected to introduce at least 2 new Surface devices this year, but Apple will likely only reveal a new iMac this year. The company’s new Mac Pro and Pro displays possibly won’t arrive until 2018, so Mac fans will have to wait quite a while for a new Mac Pro which is already a 3-year old product.
