Last Thursday, Digital Foundry revealed the specifications of Project Scorpio and described how ForzaTech is already running at 4K 60 FPS on the console. Today however, the outlet provided further details about the engine and how Turn 10 and the Xbox team are confident that Forza Motorsport 7 will match or exceed this quality. Let’s start off with the same ForzaTech screenshot provided by Microsoft. While GPU utilization is at 66% in the image, in reality it hovered between 55-70% during actual gameplay. There is a lot of room for optimization here so we will see a substantial boost to the visuals while still getting 4K 60 FPS on Project Scorpio.

The Turn 10 team didn’t stop there though. While ForzaTech was ported to Project Scorpio in just 2 days and didn’t feature complete optimization even during the demonstration, they were able to dial up the settings to ultra (from Forza Motorsport 6: Apex) and the game still maintained 4K 60 FPS throughout gameplay on the console.

Chris Tector, a software architect at Turn 10, said, “The crazy story here is that we’ve gone over our PC ultra settings and for everything that’s GPU-related, we’ve been able to max it—and that’s what we’re running at, 88%.” Games should look even better than their PC counterparts! There’s still a lot of overhead with which they can substantially improve graphics. Many dedicated gaming machines can’t do this and barely run Forza Motorsport 6: Apex at 4K 30 FPS!

Microsoft is supremely confident about Project Scorpio and it shows because they were able to reveal a beautiful game at 4K 60 FPS using an un-optimized 3-month-old technology showcase! Who knows what we’ll see in the coming months when developers gain access to the complete 6 TFLOPS and have been optimizing their games for months instead of days. Project Scorpio has definitely over-delivered on its promise and it’s great news for all gamers. The console has a chance to attract PC gamers to it, a goal which PlayStation 4 Pro failed at due so its inability to run modern titles at native 4K 60 FPS. Hopefully Microsoft will name and price the upcoming console right so that it’s a sure-shot hit with consumers. The wait for E3 2017 just got even harder.
