Microsoft is set to start rolling out the Windows 10 Creators Update in a few days. The update is a pretty big one in terms of the size, and it also brings quite a lot of new features to the Windows 10 PCs. If you happen to have a Windows 10 PC that doesn’t have a lot of space available, you can free up space for the Creators Update right now using Windows 10’s Disk Cleanup tool. In this tutorial, we will show you how to remove some of the unused files on your device to free up a lot of space on your PC using Disk Cleanup.
Firstly, you will need to open up Disk Cleaner using Cortana/Search. Simply type in “Disk Cleaner” and click on the “Free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files” from the search results:
Once you do that, Disk Cleanup will open up and it will ask you to select a drive to clean up. In our case, we chose the C: drive as it’s where we installed Windows previously. After that, the actual Disk Cleanup dialog will open and on the bottom left-hand side of the dialog, you will see a “Clean up system files” button — go ahead and click on that:
From there, you will see a new dialog for Disk Cleanup. Under the “Files to delete” section, make sure you have “Previous Windows Installation(s)” and the “Temporary Windows installation files” checkboxes checked. Keep in mind that these two options will remove the files for your previous Windows installation, as a result you won’t be able to roll back to the previous version of Windows 10 if you are having issues with the Creators Update.
Once you select all the files you want to delete, hit the OK button and Disk Cleanup will start removing those unnecessary files:
Disk Cleanup will now show you a warning notifying you about the fact that you will not be able to restore your PC back to the previous version of Windows once you delete the previous Windows installation files and the temporary Windows installation files using Disk Cleanup. If you are fine with that, simply hit on the Yes button from the dialog button:
After that, Disk Cleanup will start removing the unnecessary files and it should free up a lot of space on your PC.
You can obviously free up space on your PC before and after installing the Windows 10 Creators Update, but we wouldn’t recommend using this technique if you want to be able to restore back to your previous Windows 10 installation.source:mspoweruser
