Kodi 18 comes with 64-bit version for Windows
« on: June 07, 2017, 03:49:13 PM »

Kodi is a free media player and its developers revealed the forthcoming Kodi 18 would arrive as a 64-bit version for Windows.

Kodi’s story so far

Kodi was initially a project designed for bringing better media player to Microsoft’s first Xbox console, and it quickly became a popular cross-platform media player. It currently features many customization options and offers support for various multimedia services and formats.

It can be used to add and play local media files to provide support for streaming video and audio and TV. The current version of Kodi, Kodi 17, is offered only as a 32-bit app for Windows. Kodi for Linux and Mac comes as a 64-bit app.

More and more Windows users have been asking for a 64-bit version of Kodi since 2012 and have been wondering why it took so long to release such a version.

Releasing a 64-bit version of Kodi

One of the reasons for such a long wait is knowing how releasing a 64-bit version wouldn’t have provided many benefits for the Kodi app, along with considerably changed video formats in recent years. Another reason is that the Windows version was very different from the other two versions. Since then, Kodi has progressed a lot and now features 31 external libraries ported to 64-bit. The company says that now the Kodi app is almost feature-complete.

The 64-bit of Kodi for Windows is currently available as a development version and all interested users can download the latest build of the app by going to the official Kodi page where they’ll find the 64-bit version for the OS.

The app may still lack some functionality, but if you decide to wait for the next stable version, you can install the 64-bit version over the 32-bit one without any problems.
