Is there a new Windows smartwatch in the works from Microsoft
« on: September 11, 2017, 06:38:35 PM »

As of now, smartwatch offerings from Microsoft have mostly focused on the fitness space, but it seems like the company is planning to expand its smartwatch line in future releases.

In a new patent filing, we learned about another possible smartwatch in the works from Microsoft that may have the bells and whistles included to knock larger competitors in the space like Apple from the spotlight.

Both companies seem to be working on interchangeable bands and other modular designs for their future smartwatches, but what is unique about Microsoft’s filing is that the phone could double as a fitness tracker as well as a phone, which is perfect as the market for devices that measure heart rate, track steps and even deliver texts and calls to our wrists is gaining steam.

New research from Allied Market Research predicts that the global smartwatch market could reach $32.9 billion by 2020 – representing a CAGR of 67.6% from 2014 to 2020. Market leaders will be most focused on offering innovation and investments in R&D at their respective companies.

This latest patent has also increased speculations on a unique 3D GUI and CShell technology to adapt Windows 10 to varied screen sizes. What’s most unique in the patent design are the interchangeable wrist band links that could offer different functionality when added to the device, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth activation with the tap of a finger.

The company will be presenting at the upcoming Future Decoded event in London at the end of October and some think an official announcement on a Surface smartwatch could be made at that time.
