Hundreds of millions of web users are going to love this new improvement in Google Chrome. Often we come across websites with annoying autoplay video that makes unwanted noise. Apart from creating an embarrassing situation, autoplay media consumes valuable data and battery power when on mobile.
Google is now going to fix this annoying behavior starting with Chrome 64. Chrome will allow autoplay of media only when either the media won’t play sound, or the user has indicated an interest in the media. This change is coming to both desktop and mobile versions of Chrome.
Under the new policy media content will be allowed to autoplay under the following conditions:
■ The content is muted or does not include any audio (video only)
■ The user tapped or clicked somewhere on the site during the browsing session
■ On mobile, if the site has been
added to the Home Screen by the user
■ On desktop, if the user has frequently played media on the site, according to the
Media Engagement IndexTo give users more control over the autoplay media, Google will add a new user option to completely disable audio for individual sites starting wit Chrome 63. Also, this website muting feature will persist between browsing sessions, allowing users to customize when and where audio will play.
Chrome 64 with this new autoplay media policy will ship in Jan 2018 and Chrome 63 with site muting will ship in Oct 2017.
