It was earlier this year when we heard about Microsoft working on new project. We called it ‘Windows Andromeda‘ back then, but now it seems the project has an internal name, Andromeda OS, as reported by Windows Central.

The website, claiming sources, reports Microsoft might bring their ambitious project to fruition sometime in 2018, possibly with the release of the rumored hardware internally known as ‘Andromeda’.

Andromeda OS is the realization of Microsoft’s ‘One Windows’ dream. They have already developed things like the Universal Windows Platform (UWP), Composable Shell, and OneCore to reduce the gap between different kinds of devices running Windows 10.
One of the reasons why a modular Windows should exist is the bulkiness of the OS which has increased with its maturity over the last 30 years. But not every device needs all the components stuffed into the OS. Putting only the ones required would make the OS lighter and easier to deploy on devices with different hardware, shapes, and sizes.
The first implementation of Andromeda OS might replace the struggling Windows 10 Mobile, intended for devices like phones, tablets, wearables, etc. And in the future, we might only call it Windows 10. This introduction might be followed by the release of Andromeda OS for Xbox and desktops.
