At 2017 Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit today, Qualcomm announced that they have successfully achieved a 5G data connection using Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset. X50 modem can deliver gigabit speeds and a data connection in the 28GHz mmWave radio frequency band.

Qualcomm also revealed its first 5G smartphone reference design that will help mobile OEMs in testing and optimization of 5G technology within the power and form-factor constraints of a smartphone. New 5G technologies will be working on spectrum bands above 24 GHz (mmWave). The abundant spectrum available at these high frequencies can support extreme data speeds and capacity that will change the mobile experience that is available today.

“Achieving the world’s first announced 5G data connection with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset on the 28GHz mmWave spectrum is truly a testament to Qualcomm Technologies’ leadership in 5G and extensive expertise in mobile connectivity,” said Cristiano Amon, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and president, QCT. “This major milestone and our 5G smartphone reference design showcase how Qualcomm Technologies is driving 5G NR in mobile devices to enhance mobile broadband experiences for consumers around the world.”

The Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem family is expected to be seen in 5G smartphones and networks in the first half of 2019.
