8 hours ago we were happy to report that you could now install the Google Chrome browser via the Microsoft Store.

The installer app appeared to be completely official, linking to Google’s other applications in the Microsoft store for example.

Many readers, however, suggested it would not last, as it violated Microsoft’s policies regarding apps with limited function, and it appears they were right.

Currently, if you attempt to download the app you will receive an error as above, or even a worse one as below.

In a statement to the Verge, Microsoft confirmed the action was intentional, saying:

Quote
“We have removed the Google Chrome Installer App from Microsoft Store, as it violates our Microsoft Store policies.”
Microsoft noted the app did not  “provide unique and distinct value,”  and suggested, “Google to build a Microsoft Store browser app compliant with our Microsoft Store policies.”

Since this involves using the Edge rendering engine this is very unlikely to happen.

I am sure Microsoft has their reasons for not allowing the Chrome Installer in the store beyond the simple rules, but it seems a very anti-consumer action.
