With Windows 10, Microsoft took a leap towards ‘Windows as a service’ model. The current Windows Insider programme that we know today was not a random thought, it was well planned and sort of complement ‘Windows as Service’ model. The insider programme has its fragmentations for obvious reasons. Besides Fast ring, Slow ring and Production ring, there will be a segment of Insiders under Cohort.
Cohort is a new programme that is meant to collect feature specific feedback from a user. Basically, it puts an extra layer in the current Windows Insider programme. The feedback from the users under Cohort will provide Microsoft all the necessary data to develop or to improve features at a greater pace.
Before you jump off your seat let me clarify that Cohort is in under development right now, means it will not be available this week or month. At initial days of its release, Microsoft will invite some insider MVPs to join the Cohort and then it will be made for the general public later. The cohort will have all the experts in a particular field of development e.g., fluent design, features which are aimed at creators, developers. Currently, there are as much as Hundred people under Cohort that includes Microsoft employee and MVPs.
It goes without saying that those who will register themselves under Cohort will experience all the more rough experience as it will focus on features that are in the very early stage of development. It is worth to take a note that the current Windows Insider will not be going anywhere, it will continue to serve the purpose as it did for the Company.
A few days earlier Microsoft launched Windows 10 App Preview programme which simply allows all the Windows 10 Insiders as well as the users outside the insider programme to give feedback regarding any app in the Microsoft store. With Cohort the Company has taken a step further into a more tightly bound Windows Ecosystem. Users who want to test new feature but don’t want to compromise the performance of their PCs will be able to take full advantage of this initiative.
Cohort will see more light as Microsoft launches the final build of Redstone 4, which will go public sometime in the month of April.
