« on: March 24, 2018, 02:28:03 PM »
Microsoft always brands Windows 10 as the most secure Windows yet. Statistics were done by analytic companies also come to the same conclusion as is expected since newer operating system means better security. But the real comparison lies in how much more secure is Windows 10 when compared to older versions of Windows 7 and Windows XP.

A security report published by Webroot on the malware infections on Windows in 2017 shows some interesting results. Going by the numbers, 63% of all the files were found to be malware in Windows 7 while only 15% were found to be malware on Windows 10. Potentially Unwanted Applications per device on Windows 10 has dropped from 0.06 at the beginning of 2017 to 0.01 by the end of 2017. On taking an average every 100 Windows 10 PCs had 4 malware files while it was double at 8 malware files on 100 Windows 7 PCs. Even then Windows 7 is still the most common operating system used by businesses.

At the beginning of 2017, only 20% of known businesses were using Windows 10 but it increased to 32% by the end of 2017 whereas Windows 7 market share for businesses decreased from 62% to 54%. Windows 8 also saw a decrease from 5% to 4%  by December of 2017. Though it is difficult for enterprise companies to migrate completely to Windows 10, they should do it as soon as they can because the longer they stay with Windows 7, the more they are exposed to malware attacks.

By the end of 2017, Windows almost 72% Windows Home users migrated to Windows 10. This was 62% at the beginning of 2017. Windows 7 saw a decrease from 17% to 15% from January to December in 2017. Windows 8 also fell from 14% to 11%. While Windows Vista and Windows XP remain insignificant at 2% and 1% respectively.

Malware occurrence for Home users stood at 0.07 for Windows 10 while it was 0.16 for Windows 7 and 0.17 for Windows XP. According to Webroot, Windows 10 in business devices is more than twice as safe as Windows 7 on Home devices.

Many people and businesses are still using Windows 7. They should upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as possible because support for Windows 7 ends on January of 2020.
