Game streaming services are a dime a dozen, but that hasn’t stopped companies from trying to hit it big just like how Netflix did with Hollywood. New AAA games are always hot among the crowd, however, a lot of people still yearn for a quick and easy way to play the classics. That’s where Antstream comes in. This subscription service coming soon aims to give players access to over 1000 retro games.

According to Antstream’s website, you won’t have to download any of the games or use any emulators. It’s just straight streaming. This calls into question the quality of it as streaming games can cause a whole host of issues due to laggy internet speeds.

Antstream runs their games in “the cloud on high spec servers.” The results are then sent to you as an interactive video stream “which means it can work on mobiles, tablets and PC’s of almost any spec.” The company does use industry standard encoding and some of their own optimizations to deliver a smoother streaming experience, but we’ll have to see if it can live up to that promise. It recommends a wired ethernet connection, but 4G wireless will also work.

The service will have a catalogue of over 1000 fully licensed retro games, and has partnered with publishers like Warner (Midway, Williams and some Atari), Data East, Gremlin, Bitmap Brothers, Rebellion (Hewson Consultants, 21st Century), Alternative Software, Atlantis, Epyx, System 3, SCI as well as independents like Mel Croucher and Jeff Minter.

Antstream will launch on Android and Windows in the UK with more platforms and territories to be announced. An exact launch date was not revealed.
