Windows 10 KB4100347 Spectre patch causing serious issues
« on: August 25, 2018, 02:18:50 AM »
Windows 10 users are reporting that a Windows 10 security update is once again causing issues on their PCs.

The update in question is KB4100347 for Windows 10 April 2018 update which Microsoft describes as such:

Quote
Intel recently announced that they have completed their validations and started to release microcode for recent CPU platforms related to Spectre Variant 2 (CVE 2017-5715 [“Branch Target Injection”]). This update includes microcode updates from Intel for the following CPUs:

Users are reporting issues booting their PCs after installing the patch, with one user writing:

The problem appears to be that Microsoft is sending out the update for PCs who were not intended to receive it with HTNovo.net reporting Microsoft is pushing out the Intel microcode update to their PC with an AMD processor, and another saying their Intel processor was not on the supported list of processors the patch was designed for.

If you are having new issues after the update this may be the reason, and the remedy may be to uninstall the update via Start > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates.

Microsoft may of course attempt to re-install it, so we hope the company addresses this targeting issue as soon as possible.
