Global tablet shipments are expected to drop in both 2018 and 2019 to arrive at 141 million units next year, cannibalized by large-size smartphones, according to Digitimes Research's latest report.

For 2021-2023, worldwide tablet shipments are estimated to see on-year declines of only around 2-3% every year and will remain stable above 120 million units annually during the period.

To stimulate demand, brand tablet vendors are expected to continue offering friendly prices for their devices, undermining white-box tablets' shipment growths. In the next five years, white-box tablets' share of worldwide tablet shipments will be on a trend of decline to reach around 10-20%.

Tablets with 9-inch and above displays are expected enjoy shipment growths in 2018 thanks to demand from consumers for replacing their smaller-size models and increasing procurement from the education sector. White-box tablet shipments are expected to rise slightly from a year ago in 2018 benefiting from stabilized key component prices.

However, worldwide tablet shipments are still expected to slide from a year ago in 2018 due to weakening overall demand.

With Apple's release of its iPhone XS Max, the maximum size for a smartphone is now at 6.5-inch and it is unlikely to see a major expansion in screen size for future smartphones, easing some pressure from the table market. Digitimes Research expects mainstream tablet sizes after 2020 will be between 9.7-inch to 12.9-inch.

Apple's share in the tablet market is expected to gradually expand in the next five years due to the release of its entry-level iPad. In addition, iPad's longer product life compared to other Android-based competitors will make the tablet the top choice for replacement demand.
