Huawei will soon introduce a new flagship, the Mate 20 Pro. One of the new functions is a fingerprint scanner that is placed under the display. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer already has a telephone in the portfolio with an in-display fingerprint sensor, namely the Mate RS Porsche Design. This device can only be reached with a starting price of 1,700 but for a very limited target group.

Huawei smartphone with two screen areas

At the beginning of this year, Huawei filed a patent with the USPTO for a 'device with peripheral taskbar display zone and under-LCD screen optical sensor module for on-screen fingerprint sensing'. The patent was published on September 13, 2018, and describes a smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. This is placed under the display in the lower part. In addition, the patent describes a taskbar that can be operated separately from the rest of the display.

The patented Huawei smartphone has a bezel at the top, similar to the Mate RS. A notch is expected with the Mate 20 (Pro). The bottom bezel has completely disappeared. A so-called peripheral display zone has been placed here, which can be used as a taskbar. For example, messages or text, icons or images can be displayed in the extra screen area. The taskbar also remains usable when the display is locked. In addition, a lighting module and a light diffuser are installed, which are necessary for the proper functioning of the in-display fingerprint scanner.

Smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor

The fingerprint scanner contains an optical sensor, like that of Synaptics and Goodix, the latter is also used in the Mate RS. The Synaptics sensor is then used by Vivo again. Samsung is reportedly working on an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, which would be used for the first time in the Galaxy S10 that is expected in early 2019. With an ultrasonic sensor, it is theoretically possible to use the entire display as a fingerprint sensor. This is not the case with the Huawei optical sensor.

In addition to the fingerprint, the optical sensor can also detect another biometric parameter, for, example your heart rate. The sensor module can detect a change in the reflected light of the finger as a result of the change in heart rate / blood flow and can thus detect whether there is a true heartbeat. In this way, it can be excluded that an image or the like of a fingerprint can be used to unlock the device.

Another possible biometric parameter mentioned in the patent is the measurement of the glucose level or the degree of oxygen saturation. In the patent, it is not clear how long the in-display fingerprint scanner will do to identify a user. The Mate RS took about 2 seconds, which is significantly slower than the fingerprint scanners that are currently mostly used and where we have all become used to.

The technology can be used on both an LCD and OLED display. Huawei usually supplies its top models with an OLED display, while the model is equipped directly with an LCD screen. The Mate 10 is equipped with an LCD display, while the Mate 10 Pro has an AMOLED display. A similar differentiation has also been applied in the P20 series.

Huawei is going to announce new smartphones

Next Tuesday, October 16, 2018, Huawei will introduce the new Mate 20 smartphones. The Mate 20 Lite has already been announced in September, this time the top models, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Probably only the Mate 20 Pro will be equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
