We already knew that chip-maker Qualcomm was working on new dual core and quad core ARM-based processors for smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices. Now we know that in addition to supporting Android, Windows Phone 7, and other mobile operating systems, those chips will support Windows 8.
The upcoming MSM8960 chip will be the first Qualcomm Snapdragon processor to support Windows. Qualcomm has been promoting this chip since late last year, but this is the first indication we’ve had that it will support Windows. The company will start sampling the chip this month which means we may see actual products using the 2.5 GHz dual core processor later this year.
Qualcomm also says the upcoming quad-core Snapdragon APQ8064 will support Windows 8 when the chip starts sampling early next year. Both low power chips include graphics, WiFi, and mobile broadband connectivity.
