Netmarketshare: Windows 10 finally overtakes Windows 7
« on: January 01, 2019, 06:30:58 PM »

Netmarketshare’s numbers for the month of December 2018 are out today, after a seemingly interminable wait, Microsoft ended 2018 on a high note, with their latest OS finally overtaking their 10-year-old version.

According to Netmarketshare, in December 2018 Windows 10 held 39.22% market share, finally topping the 36.9% held by Windows 7.

On the desktop browser, front things are not quite as rosy, as Google has confirmed their dominance by taking more than 2/3 of the desktop browser market share.

According to Netmarketshare Chrome now has 67.18% market share, while both Edge and Internet Explorer continues to fade.  Firefox has experienced somewhat of a resurgence, suggesting those who refuse to use Chrome has sought an alternate browser elsewhere.

Zooming out from month to month to Year over Year, the numbers show one worrying trend for Microsoft.

Year over Year Windows has been losing market share to both Linux and more significantly MacOS. Thankfully for Microsoft Apple’s growth is self-limiting due to the price premium of its hardware, and ChromeOS, a much more vigorous competitor, does not appear to have made any significant headway this year.
