Bad news for Andromeda as Microsoft kills Microsoft Wallet
« on: January 21, 2019, 09:36:59 PM »
Any hope of Microsoft producing a handheld smart device has just faded a bit more, as Microsoft announced the death of their NFC payment service Microsoft Wallet.

The service is set to sunset on the 28th February and was only ever really available in the USA and on a small selection of Windows Phones, so it seems unlikely that it will be missed by many.

It does, however, make it less likely that Microsoft ever intends to release a handheld device with a competitive feature set, as mobile payments are one of those features only the platform provider can really offer.

Microsoft reportedly sent their Surface Phone back to the drawing board in the middle of last year, and there are new rumours of a laptop-sized device with a foldable screen as a replacement. It seems, as Microsoft has advised when announcing the end of support of Windows 10 Mobile, that if you want to work with a device you can hold in the palm of your hand, your only choice going forward will be Apple or Google.
