Samsung is set to launch their Samsung Galaxy F folding smartphone at their Unpacked event on the 20th February 2019.  Soon after Huawei will be firing off their own response, as confirmed by Huawei CEO Richard Yu.

Speaking at their pre-MWC 2019 event, he confirmed that Huawei will be presenting their own folding smartphone, a handset in the Mate series which is 5G capable, powered by their Kirin 980 processor and Balong 5000 5G modem.

Yu did not confirm any more details regarding the handset, for example if the device is inward or outward folding, but it may look like the render above, created by LetsGoDigital and based on earlier Huawei patents.

The outward-folding device is technically less complicated, easier to manufacture, offers a larger screen size, does not require a secondary outside screen and should be cheaper than Samsung’s in-ward folding handset, meaning Huawei should be able to offer significant competition to Samsung’s device.

Huwaei will unveil the device at their 25th February keynote at MWC 2019, but will likely be surrounded by other companies with their own folding devices, including Motorola with their new Razr and Xa0mi with their tri-fold design. It seems the age of the folding phone has truly arrived.
