Icons and Screenshots of Microsoft's Chromium-based Edge Browser Leaked Online

Leaked images related to Microsoft's Chromium-based Edge browser have been leaked online this past week. These images include ones allegedly for the Edge installer and what appears to be an Edge Canary icon.

In December 2018, we reported that Microsoft will be abandoning their current Edge browser and rebuilding the browser from scratch using the Chromium rendering engine. Since this announcement, little else has been officially released.

On February 24th, a Twitter user named ADeltaX tweeted about alleged installer screens for the upcoming Edge browser.  It is not known how this user gained access to these screenshots.


Leaked Installer Screens

To continue with the leaked images, in what appears to be a mistake, Chris Heilmann, Program Manager for Open Web and Browsers at Microsoft, had posted a picture of his desktop that showed two icons for the edge browser and one icon for Chrome. The middle icon shows a gold-colored Edge icon with the text "CAN" across it, which indicates that this may be a Canary build of the Chromium-based Edge browser.



Canary builds of Chrome are nightly builds that utilize a gold icon and contain the most current features being added to the browser.

What's known about the Chromium-based Edge browser

Microsoft has announced that the new Edge browser will use the Chromium rendering engine in order to provide better web site compatibility, a standardized platform for building and testing web sites, and better app compatibility for the enterprise.

While Microsoft has not explicitly stated that they will remove Google services from their browser, it is assumed they will do so and replace them with Microsoft services.

Kyle Pflug, a Microsoft Senior Product Manager for the Microsoft Edge team, has also posted on Reddit and stated that the new Edge browser will also support Chrome extensions. This will immediately enable a large ecosystem of extensions for Edge users in Windows 10.
