Google Chrome Adding Support For Nintendo Switch Gamepads
« on: March 15, 2019, 10:36:57 AM »

You will soon be able to use the Nintendo Switch gamepads to control online games in Google Chrome using the GamePad API.

The GamePad API is an API that allows users to interact directly with web applications using a gamepad plugged into their PC. This could be used for numerous applications such as online gaming, virtual reality, or accessibility.

In January 2018, a Chromium bug report was created to add support for the Nintendo Switch Pro controller so that it could be used with the Gamepad API.

Chrome Bug Report

In a recent update to this bug report, a new Chromium Gerrit commit was created that adds better support to a variety of Nintendo Switch controllers that are connected to a computer via USB or Bluetooth.

Quote
This adds support for Nintendo Switch controllers through Gamepad API:

* Switch Pro (USB and Bluetooth)
* Joy-Con L (Bluetooth)
* Joy-Con R (Bluetooth)
* Joy-Con L+R (Bluetooth)
* Charging Grip (USB)

This commit is currently waiting for a review before it can make it to the main Chromium development branch.

For those who want to learn more about how to use the GamePad API, you can take a look at these guides from Mozilla and the working draft.

BleepingComputer has also created sample HTML with JavaScript that you can use to read the ID of a connected gamepad after you press a button. This sample can be found here or at this JSFiddle.

While adding Nintendo Switch gamepad support to Google Chrome makes sense, others have been playing with the Nintendo Switch for more bizarre reasons. For example, earlier this month a developer has started working on a way to install Windows 10 on a Nintendo Switch.
