It all started with the legend Lumia 1020(ahem Nokia 808). The Windows Phone was one of a kind mainly due to the sheer brilliance in camera performance. It’s was 41-megapixel in 2013.

Fast forwarding six years, we are finally seeing smartphone going ahead of the Lumia 1020 in the pixel count. We now have Oppo F11 Pro, Vivo V15 Pro, Honor View 20, and Redmi Note 7 Pro, all rocking a 48-megapixel shooter.

And if you are thinking that 48-megapixel is all that we’ll be getting throughout this year or in the coming two to three years then you are wrong. Judd Heape, Qualcomm’s senior director of product management is here to make some spoiler. Mr. Heape is hopeful about the megapixel war to go the next level with smartphone manufacturer releasing smartphones that rock more than 100-megapixel  camera later this year.

In an interview with Digit, Judd  Heape confirmed that manufacturers have already started working on the higher megapixel sensors. He also revealed that the megapixel counts to jump to the mid-100s in 2020.

Qualcomm has already made a few chipsets 100-megapixel ready. Snapdragon 670, 675, 710, 712, 845 and 855 all support camera sensors of up to 192 megapixels. The challenge, however, is for the manufacturers. More pixels means an increase of camera size and that, in turn, makes the device bulkier which is something that no one wants. To achieve what seems impossible to most of us, Heape is of the opinion that the manufacturers will attempt to shrink the size of the individual pixels further to make room for more pixels.

This is going to be huge and you should brace yourself for part two of the megapixel war.
