Microsoft has launched the Chromium-based Edge browser for Windows 10, with Windows 7, 8.1, mac, and Linux versions coming at a later date. The new Edge comes with a revamped interface, a new set of features and major performance improvements.

In a blog post, Microsoft also confirmed that it plans to bring the Chromium-based Edge browser to Windows 10 on ARM devices. Microsoft says Edge team is closely working with Google engineers to allow Chromium to run natively on Windows on ARM devices starting with Chromium 73.

According to Microsoft, not only Edge but all Chromium-based browsers would be able to run on ARM-based Windows 10 PCs when the Chromium base itself is ready. The arrival of Chromium-based browsers on ARM-based PCs will significantly improve the performance of the browsers and reduce heavy battery consumption.

"We’ve been collaborating with Google engineers to enable Chromium to run natively on Windows on ARM devices starting with Chromium 73. With these contributions, Chromium-based browsers will soon be able to ship native implementations for ARM-based Windows 10 PCs, significantly improving their performance and battery life," Microsoft explains.

ARM compatibility for Chromium-based browsers would make a lot of sense for Qualcomm, Microsoft, Google, and other companies. Without a native version of browsers for ARM, it’s difficult for ARM-powered Windows 10 devices to meet performance and battery expectations.

It looks like we may be close too, as developer Jeremy Sinclair was able to successfully compile the ARM version of Chromium and run it on Windows ARM64.
