Chrome May Soon Allow Custom Avatars for Browser Profiles
« on: April 01, 2019, 12:58:16 AM »

One of the top requested Google Chrome features is the ability to use custom avatars for different profiles that are configured in the browser. After almost 8 years, this bug has finally been assigned to someone on the Chromium team as a feature request to improve the browser's multi-profile experience.

A Chromium bug post titled "Multi-Profiles: Add support for custom avatar" was created in 2011 and is the fourth most starred an open issue on the Chromium Bugs site. This bug report was first opened by a Chromium developer who stated that Chrome users should be able to choose a local image or supply an URL to one that would be used for a browser profile's avatar.

Chrome currently allows you to associate an avatar to a profile from a list of bundled images or your Google Account avatar if you are logged in to Google.

Available Avatars

If you have multiple profiles, Chrome will display these avatars in the Windows taskbar icon as seen below so that you can differentiate the browser sessions.

Users, though, do not think the current functionality of using the logged in Google account image or one of the bundled images is good enough and have provided numerous examples of why custom avatars are necessary.

One particular example that stuck out to me is how an accountant uses different profiles for each of their clients. This allows them to configure each profile with the information, bookmarks, and other information required for a particular client and so that they do not get mixed up with other clients. By utilizing custom avatars for each of their clients, it would be easier to spot the open browser window for who they are currently working on.

The good news is that there is finally movement on this issue, as on March 26, 2019 this bug was assigned to a Chromium team member to be handled as a feature request. When more information becomes available or development begins, we will update this post.
