At the Build 2019 conference, Microsoft has unveiled its new modern console for Windows 10 called Windows Terminal, which includes tabbed support, GPU acceleration, syntax highlighting, and more.

The Windows Terminal is not being designed to replace existing consoles such as the Command Prompt or PowerShell, but rather to offer a more feature reach console with support for the other shells installed in Windows.

Windows Terminal

One of the most anticipated features is the ability to open tabs for multiple console windows in one Windows Terminal window. When opening tabs, you will be able to select the shell you wish to use, which includes the normal CMD shell, PowerShell, and any associated shells from Linux distributions installed via the Windows Subsystem for Linux.

These shells will then be launched into their own tab as shown below.

The Windows Terminal also includes a GPU accelerated DirectWrite/DirectX-based text rendering engine. This means that it can not only render text much faster, but also display emojis, symbols, syntax highlighting, and more.

Graphics and Emoji Support

As the Windows Terminal will allow you to launch numerous shells from one interface, you will have the ability to create custom profiles for each of these shells. This allows you to customize the colors, fonts, and layouts for the shells you use the most.

Currently Windows Terminal is in open preview with Microsoft asking for the community to provide input as to what features they wish to see and to even contribute features that you would like to see included in the product.

Microsoft plans on distributing the Windows Terminal through the Microsoft Store this June. For those who wish to compile it now or contribute to its development, you can learn more at the Windows Terminal GitHub page.
