Huawei has just pushed back the launch of their dual-pane Huawei Mate X folding smartphone, but as is normal their engineers have not stopped working on the next version of the technology.

LetsGoDigital has uncovered a patent application dating to summer 2018 which was published a few weeks ago by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) on 31 May 2019.

When folded the device would look like a somewhat conventional if thick smartphone, but with a screen which wraps around both edges of the device.

The magic happens when these edges unfurl.

That opens up two extra full-sized screens which turn the device into a very reasonable-sized tablet.

The two folding edges also give a number of other options, including a “stand” mode which would let the device stand up by itself, for video conferencing for example.

The design comes in a number of variations, including the full-screened version illustrated, which suggests the camera may be under the screen.

Probably the biggest issue with the design is the limited protection for the screens when the device will be in the pocket, especially considering how much it is likely to cost.
