Windows 10 v1903 causes high disk usage on SSD systems
« on: July 07, 2019, 08:23:07 PM »

Microsoft released Windows 10 version 1903 a few weeks ago. This major feature update brought a new series of bugs for Windows 10 users.

We recently spotted an interesting Reddit thread where Windows 10 users complained about high disk usage issues after installing the latest update.

Now on to the problem, for the last 3 months I’ve been trying to troubleshoot a problem without any success, the issue is that one of my Samsung 970 Pro NVME SSD will randomly get stuck at 100% disk usage with 0 KB/s Read or Write and that drive will cease to function until a hard system reset. this usually happens on a specific NVME slot on the motherboard.

The description was followed by the following screenshot.

According to the OP, the system is currently running Windows 10 version 1903 and the bug affects Windows 10 version 1809 as well.

However, a recent Windows 10 Cumulative Update seems to be the main culprit for this problem. Apparently, the forced update messed up the Samsung 970 Pro NVME SSD drivers.

The Redditor tried a series of steps to troubleshoot the issue but the problem persisted.

This issue can occur regardless of the fact that the game is installed on the NVME drive or not. Furthermore, you can experience the same situation when the PC is in idle mode.

Many users confirmed they also experienced 100% disk usage issues with NVMe drives. One of the users pointed out the fact that various SSDs are often affected by overheating problems that can cause similar issues. Therefore, the functionality of the cooling fan needs to be ensured.

Fix 100% disk usage in Windows 10 v1903

If you are also experiencing 100% disk usage in Windows 10, you should try some simple steps to fix it.

1. Follow the steps mentioned in this guide to fix the issue.

2. Alternatively, open Control Panel and navigate to Uninstall a Program >> View installed updates to uninstall the recent cumulative update from your system.

Finally, it is recommended that you should block the update as well. Microsoft has yet to acknowledge the bug despite many complaints.
