A few days back we’ve covered some Windows insiders running Windows 10 build 18999 are noticing Windows shutdown or restart doesn’t complete, the screen gets stuck or the PC continues to run in the background and doesn’t get turned off. The issue was acknowledged by Microsoft and said they’re investigating, today the company said they’re still working on a fix for the issue meanwhile posted a workaround to overcome this for those affected.

Microsoft clarified everyone using the build 18999 not affected with this bug and warns not to try random workarounds such as uninstalling and reinstalling Windows components, as they don’t fix the problem. The company says seems the issue not impacted automatic sleep or hibernation.

When you try to shut down or restart Windows 10 running the Build 18999 if you notice ” “spinning dots” appear on the logoff screen for an extended period/indefinite amount of time, then you’ve hit this particular issue”, said Jason from Microsoft in a forum thread.

Jason provided cmd shortcuts for shutdown and restart as a workaround. If you’re affected, then you should be using them to shut down or restart the device.

To shutdown:

1. Click Start

2. Type cmd and press enter

3. Copy and paste “shutdown /s /t 1” (without quotes) in command prompt and press enter

To restart:

1. Open the command prompt by typing cmd in Start Search

2. In the command prompt window, type or paste  “restart /r /t  1” (without quotes) and press enter.

Albeit because of bug, you just read Microsoft asking users to use dos commands to turn off or restart Windows, this says those commands or shortcuts are still useful.
