Samsung’s red-hot new Galaxy S20 (details), Galaxy S20+ (details), Galaxy S20 Ultra (details) and radical Galaxy Z Flip are dominating news headlines. But now, thanks to Samsung, they are about to dominate for all the wrong reasons.

Spotted by the eagle-eyed SamMobile, Samsung has warned buyers of all its new flagship smartphones that they will only receive two generations of Android upgrades (that’s Android 11, which has already entered public beta testing and Android 12, which will be released next year). This news comes despite Samsung jacking up the prices for its new models, making them the most expensive mass-market smartphones ever released.

04/03 Update: for those who have taken the plunge on Samsung's latest (and most expensive) flagship smartphones, reports are spreading that the devices have been shipping ahead of their official March 6 release date with customers already receiving them. This appears to be across multiple carriers in the US though it is important to note that there are significant firmware updates available for the phones already and you should install them first as they bring a number of major bug fixes and performance upgrades. Verizon customers, in particular, should pay attention to this with the updates already live ahead of release. If you don't receive automatic notification of the update when you first start your phone, once you finish your setup follow these steps: Settings > System updates > Check for system updates > Download now > Install. Note: your phone will restart during this process.

Samsung quietly issued this news on its Android Security Page, which means most mainstream buyers are going to miss it. And it is a pattern of disappointment, that has played out before. As 9to5Google notes, “Earlier this year, Galaxy S8 users were up in arms because their 2-year-old flagship wasn’t scheduled to get Android 10, but that outcry didn’t change a darn thing.”

The difference this time, of course, is that Samsung’s smartphone prices are stratospheric compared to the investment required to land a Galaxy S8 (launch price from $750) with the entry-level Galaxy S20 costing almost $300 more (from $999). Yes, there was a big jump from the Galaxy S9 (from just $720) to the Galaxy S10 (from $899) but Samsung also priced the Galaxy S20 Ultra (from $1,399) and Galaxy Z Flip (from $1,380) close to $1,400 it doesn’t seem a big ask for customers to expect Samsung to deliver longer-lasting support.

After paying $1,400, Galaxy Z Flip owners deserve more than their Android
upgrades running out next year.
Yes, many Android phone makers are a little better (Google offers three years of Android upgrades for Pixel owners) but, by contrast, Apple supported the iPhone 5S for five generations of iOS before support ended with iOS 13 last year.

As such, Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip owners need to be aware of what they are getting themselves into. Samsung quietly putting out this warning on a page of its website almost no-one will read is not good enough.

It’s not only time Galaxy owners demanded better, but it’s also time Samsung listened.
